Factual Fluency - What is it all about ?
It is important to help pupils attain their fluency in their basic
addition skills. If the fluent retrieval does not develop, then the development of higher-order math skills
- such as multiple-digit addition and subtraction, long division and fractions
may be severely impaired.
Research has also shown that cognitive psychologist have discovered that humans have fixed limits on the attention and memory that can be used to solve
problems. It was pointed out that one way around it these limits is to have
certain components of a task become so
routine and over-learned that they become automatic. Pupils can then free
their cognitive load in their brain to solve more challenging Math questions.
In our Math classroom, I work with the pupils’ speed and accuracy in recalling basic Math facts. Fluency demands more of students than memorising a
single procedure – they need to understand why they are doing what they are doing
and know when it is appropriate to use different methods.
Do work together with me on improving their Math Factual Fluency. This term we are focusing on :
1) Number Bonds of 10
2) Addition Facts Within 10
3) Subtraction Facts Within 10
For Number Bonds of 10, I say 6 and the child have to respond with a 4 ( number bonds of 10) etc.
I strongly encourage you to practise this at home with your child. A number of the pupils have already won the Number Bond Champion badge. I hope more of them will come forward to me to tell me they are ready to earn the badge .
Dear IE pupils,
For those who have not got the badge , Don't be discouraged. Continue to practise and I am confident that all of you will win the badge soon.
Here are some photos of you working in pairs to improve your addition facts skills.
