Working with Ipads for Addition Factual Fluency

This morning we worked with 2 I pads apps to improve our addition facts.

Teaching of Addition

In this blog entry, I am sharing how addition concept is being taught in the class so that you can better support your child at home.

After they got a chance to add with manipulative ( ice cream sticks, link cubes etc...) we moved on to the abstract.

Method 1 :

1. Counting on .....

We use a chant that says "bigger number put in the heart"  so with the following question stem :

9 + 7 = _____

We will do the action of putting 9 in our hearts than we count on with out fingers 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 , 16 until 7 fingers are out.

2. Making 10

A faster method will the the making 10 method. This method is faster than counting on but it does involve some mental work.

This concept requires them to know their friends of 10 very well which 1E is really fast by now :)

Step 1 : Circle the bigger number

Step 2 : Find the Number Bond Friend and make them hold hands by drawing a line to connect them.

Step 3 : Draw a big circle around them and write 10 in the big circle.

Step 4 : Where does the 1 comes from?
              It comes from 7.
7 subtract 1 we are left with 6 and we write that below 7 .
Then we add 10 to 6 to get 16.

If it is the adding for 2 digits to 1 digit, we will use the counting on method.

Math Trail

We had our Math Trail on Thursday. Special thanks to Matthias' mummy who came to assist me in the activity. She helped to take most of the photos in this blog entry.

Their task is to go to the canteen to count the various shapes and then to the hopscotch play area to work on Number Bonds.

We have a fun time exploring Math in our environment and we sure look forward to our next Math Trail in Semester 2
